Chelating Agent

"Chelate" (Chelate) is derived from the Greek "chele", which means "crab's pincers". It refers to an organic molecule (ligand) that forms a ring structure with metal ions (such as iron, zinc, copper, manganese, etc.) through multiple coordination bonds, "grabbing" metal ions like pincers, making them more stable in the chemical environment and less prone to being immobilized or precipitated.

According to this property of the chelating agent, it can be widely used in daily chemical washing, industrial cleaning, textile additives, pulp and paper, building materials retarder, special chemicals, oil and gas extraction and transportation, agricultural chelation of trace elements and many other fields.

Nowadays, chelating agents are mainly divided into two categories. One is traditional chelating agents, such as EDTA, which are difficult to biodegrade and therefore very stable. The other is green chelating agents, such as GLDA and MGDA, which can achieve biodegradation and are environmentally friendly green phosphorus-free chelating agents.

Tetrasodium iminodisuccinate (IDS 4NA)
Tetrasodium aspartate diacetate (ASDA 4NA)
Trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate (EDDS 3NA), etc.

Traditional chelating agents include:
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), disodium ethylenediaminetraacetic acid (EDTA 2Na), tetrasodium ethylenediaminetraacetic acid (EDTA 4Na);
Hydroxyethylenediphosphonic acid (HEDP), hydroxy ethylenediphosphonic acid disodium (HEDP 2Na), hydroxy ethylenediphosphonic acid tetrasodium (HEDP 4Na);
Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), pentasodium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA 5Na);
Nitrile trisodium acetate (NTA 3NA), etc.

Under different temperatures, pH values, and formulation systems, the chelating amount and strength of various metal ions vary greatly, so it is necessary to choose according to the application environment and determine the selection after the test.
