Builders, in English, refer to components that enhance the detergency of the main active ingredient, surfactant, in synthetic detergents. The amount of builder added to laundry powder can be as high as 40% to 60%.
In detergent formulations, builders primarily play the following roles to ensure high cleaning performance:
Softening Water: Reducing the concentration of hardness ions such as Ca2+ and Mg2+ in tap water, preventing ash deposition on fabric surfaces.
pH Buffering: Maintaining alkalinity to make it easier to remove acidic dirt from daily life.
Soil Suspension and Dispersion: Breaking down "calcium bridges" between fabric and dirt, making particles easier to remove and preventing redeposition.
Surfactant Synergy: Enhancing the overall effectiveness of the active cleaning agents.
Historically, the development of new detergents has always been closely linked to the emergence of new builders.
Early Auxiliaries: Soap-based detergents used amorphous sodium silicate (water glass) and sodium carbonate. While they provided alkalinity, they often formed insoluble substances that left fabrics stiff and brittle.
The Phosphate Era: In the 1940s, sodium pyrophosphate was introduced. By the 1950s, Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) became the dominant multifunctional builder. STPP is non-toxic and excellent for performance, but its contribution to eutrophication (algal blooms in water bodies) led to environmental concerns and subsequent bans or restrictions in many countries.
To replace phosphates, the industry has developed a balanced co-agent system and high-performance biodegradable chelators.
Currently, the dominant phosphate substitutes include:
4A Zeolite: Reduces hardness ions through ion exchange.
Sodium Carbonate: Maintains alkalinity.
Polycarboxylate: Inhibits crystal growth and disperses dirt.
New green chelating agents are gaining significant traction due to their high efficiency and environmental safety. Notable examples include:

GLDA-Na4 (Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate)
MGDA-Na3 (Trisodium Methylglycinediacetate)
Manufacturer Spotlight: Shandong Yuanlian Chemical Co., Ltd. is a key producer of these sustainable alternatives.
In addition to builders and surfactants, synthetic detergents include other components:
Auxiliaries/Additives: Non-stain-removing components with special functions (e.g., optical brighteners, enzymes).
Fillers: Laundry powder often contains a large amount of sodium sulfate (Glauber's salt). It is neither an auxiliary nor an additive but serves as a filler to improve the physical properties of the powder.
